The Grey Area
2024 Take Film Festival “Best Editor” Winner
The Grey Area is a sci-fi/drama short film about a dimension-hopping “jumper” who discovers a young girl on a seemingly deserted planet.
Apart from feeling honored, when Nina brought me onto the project during pre-production, and apart from feeling honored, I was immediately drawn to the challenge of shaping The Grey Area into a cohesive and compelling story. My role involved two key responsibilities:
Effectively supervising and overseeing assistant editors.
Editing a narrative that relied heavily on precise execution to function as intended.
The film’s storytelling hinged on seamless match cuts and deliberate color grading to distinguish shifts between worlds. If executed poorly, these transitions could lead to confusion and disrupt the narrative flow. It was crucial not only to ensure clarity between the dimensions but also to establish distinct visual identities that were both cohesive and aesthetically engaging.
In the end, The Grey Area was some of the most fun I’ve ever had on set and editing, and it was awarded “Best Editing” at the 2024 Take X Film Festival at LSU.
